Pilanesberg Game Reserve on Saturday, March 9 (1 of 3)

Several of us decided to tour Pilanesberg for the day, a game reserve in the crater of a long extinct volcano.  It is a fascinating and beautiful place, full of an amazing assortment of animals.  We left at 4:30AM for the two hour drive there so that we could have the best chance of seeing animals near dawn.  It was a strategy that paid off.

First up, just inside the Park's eastern gate we came across white rhinoceros near the side of the road.

We stayed for a few minutes, shooting pictures from inside the van, until this fellow started focusing on us and moving closer.  At that point our driver decided we should move along and we next came upon some kudu, an antelope with big ears and vertical white stripes.
We saw several groups of impala.  Impala have an "M" on their butts, which, if you were a lion, might look like McDonalds arches.
We saw Helmeted Guineafowl crossing the road.

Then some giraffe at a distance.

A meerkat scampered across the road.
Then eagle eyed Mala, a teammate from India, spotted something moving in the distance (can you see it?), so our driver stopped the van and we waited.
It was a pair of buffalo.

A little farther on, we came upon a warthog....and family, four in all.
